What is Oral Bone Grafting Surgery?
Oral Bone Grafting Surgery is a dental procedure used to restore and rebuild bone in areas of the jaw where bone loss has occurred due to tooth loss, infections, gum disease, or injury. When teeth are lost, the surrounding bone in the jaw can shrink, creating an insufficient foundation for placing dental implants.
Am I a Good Candidate?
You may be a good candidate for oral bone grafting if you:
- Have Missing Teeth: If you’ve lost teeth due to infection, periodontal disease, or trauma, and are considering dental implants but lack sufficient bone.
- Suffer from Bone Loss: If your jawbone has deteriorated or become too thin to support dental implants, bone grafting can rebuild the bone to provide a stable foundation.
- Want to Improve Jaw Structure: If you’ve noticed changes in the contour of your jaw or face after tooth loss, bone grafting can restore the natural shape and structure.
- Are in Good General Health: A candidate should be in good overall health, as conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or other chronic illnesses may affect healing.
- Are Committed to Post-Operative Care: Bone grafting requires healing time and proper oral hygiene, so commitment to follow-up care is essential.
Consult with a qualified periodontist or oral surgeon to assess your specific condition and determine if you’re a suitable candidate for this procedure.
Benefits:
- Foundation for Dental Implants: Restores lost bone to provide a solid base for dental implants, ensuring long-term stability.
- Improved Facial Aesthetics: Rebuilds jawbone structure, restoring the natural contour of your face and preventing a “sunken” appearance after tooth loss.
- Enhanced Oral Function: Restored bone allows for better chewing, speaking, and overall mouth function by supporting new teeth.
- Prevents Further Bone Loss: By regenerating bone, grafting helps stop further deterioration in the jaw, maintaining long-term oral health.
- Better Fit for Dentures: Improves the fit of dentures by reshaping the jawbone, making them more comfortable and functional.
- Increased Confidence: A natural-looking smile is achieved with implants or dentures, boosting self-esteem and confidence.
- Long-Term Oral Health: Regeneration of bone and tissue can help maintain the overall health and stability of your mouth for years to come.
More Details:
Loss of teeth from infection or periodontal disease or traumatic injury will leave the patient with ridge deformities in the upper or lower jaw and inadequate bone space in which to place dental implants.
Ridge augmentation can fill in this defect recapturing the natural contour of the gums and jaw. A new natural-looking tooth can then be created. To correct the problem, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to expose, fill and reconstruct the defect.
Our periodontists and oral surgeons use well documented biocompatible graft materials, which can help regenerate lost bone and tissue. The bone is usually allowed to develop for 4 to 9 months before implants are placed. In some cases, the implant can be placed at the time of ridge reconstruction.
Our dentist Prof. Nada Naaman has been treating patients for more than 20 years. They will keep you comfortable throughout the entire procedure.
