Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, or liposculpture, is a widely performed cosmetic procedure aimed at reshaping specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits. Common target areas include the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms, and face, among others.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Determining whether you are a suitable candidate for liposuction involves several factors that should be assessed by a qualified medical professional. Generally, good candidates for liposuction:

  1. Have localized fat deposits: Liposuction is most effective for removing stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. It’s not a solution for overall weight loss.
  2. Are in good overall health: Being in good physical health reduces the risks associated with surgery and anesthesia.
  3. Have realistic expectations: Liposuction can enhance body contours, but it is important to have realistic expectations about the results.
  4. Are at or near their ideal weight: Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, so candidates should be close to their target weight. It’s typically recommended for individuals within 30% of their ideal weight.
  5. Have firm, elastic skin: Good skin elasticity helps ensure that the skin can adapt well to the new contours after fat removal.
  6. Have a positive attitude and commitment to maintaining results: Liposuction is not a permanent solution if healthy habits aren’t maintained afterward.

  • Improved body contours: Liposuction can effectively remove localized fat deposits, resulting in smoother and more sculpted body contours. This can enhance the overall appearance and proportions of the body.
  • Targeted fat reduction: Liposuction allows for precise targeting of specific areas of the body where fat deposits are resistant to diet and exercise. This enables patients to address problem areas that may have been difficult to improve through other means.
  • Motivation for a healthier lifestyle: For some patients, undergoing liposuction serves as a motivator to adopt healthier habits, such as maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise routine. This can lead to long-term improvements in overall health and well-being.
  • Minimal downtime: Advances in liposuction techniques, such as the tumescent method, have resulted in shorter recovery times and reduced discomfort compared to traditional approaches. Many patients are able to resume their normal activities relatively quickly after the procedure.

More Details:

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedures today. Areas of unsightly fat deposits, such as the face, the abdomen, lips, and thigh, but also the breasts and ankles, can be re-contoured by suctioning the undesired excess fat.

At Skin Experts Polyclinic, many cases of liposculpture are done entirely under local anesthesia (tumescent technique), eliminating the risks of full anesthesia, and more importantly, minimizing the discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Moreover, we use smaller instruments, often smaller than a pencil (advances brought into the field of liposuction by U.S. dermatologic surgeons) to refine the esthetic results.

Patients typically wear a garment for 5-7 days only, have almost no bruising or swelling the next day and resume normal activities in 48 hours, and exercise in 10 days. This is one of the most rewarding procedures in our practice with final results seen at 2-3 months.
