More Details:

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is one of the most common conditions seen in dermatology. It is genetically inherited, usually starts in early childhood and tends to improve with age. If triggering factors are not identified, atopic dermatitis may persist into adulthood. It presents with itchy, red, dry patches and usually flares in the winter season. New adult cases of dermatitis are often the result of allergies to topical agents.

Treatment of eczema requires first recognizing all triggering factors. These include dust mite, cats and other environmental factors. Maintenance therapy with a special daily routine is highly important to minimize recurrences. We work with our team of nutritionists to identify trigger foods such as milk, eggs, soy, wheat and peanuts. Patch testing can be done to exclude possible contact allergens. Daily hydration of the skin with a thick cold cream directly after shower is key. Topical treatments are the primary treatment for eczema flares, given for short periods of time to avoid side effects. Only a minority of patients have a bad form of eczema with frequent severe exacerbations. Such patients can benefit from long term treatment with biomodulator medications or phototherapy.

Dermatology is a vast field, with hundreds of distinct conditions that are impossible to cover here. At Skin Experts, we will do our best to identify any diagnosis by all means possible, and recommend the best possible treatment based on scientific evidence. We will always treat our patients with compassion, and recommend a comfortable and safe treatment plan. We take dermatology very seriously, and believe that healthy skin is essential to wellbeing.
