Atopic dermatitis — also known as eczema — is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes itchy, red, dry patches. It often begins in early childhood, though it can persist or even start later in life.

The condition results from a genetic tendency combined with immune system sensitivity. The skin barrier becomes weak and more prone to irritation, allergens, and environmental triggers, which leads to flare-ups.
